BY Ye ChenApr 10, 2020
Guangzhou LONKEY, a giant in China’s domestic daily chemical product sector, has begun mass-production of shower gel and hand sanitizer containing cannabis leaf extract. The products are already on pre-sale at Tmall. LONKEY’s new products mainly contain cannabis leaf extract rather than CBD. The latter is still prohibited in China as a cosmetic ingredient because it is not included in IECIC.

Guangzhou LONKEY, a domestic daily chemical product giant in China, has just launched a cannabis extract product. The move is a major signal that China is embracing the global cannabis industry. On April 7, this company issued an announcement officially launching its cannabis shower gel and hand sanitizer. Another subsidiary of the company, Guangzhou Qihua, is also mass-producing facial creams, essence, and facial masks containing cannabis leaf extract.

At present, of the ten patents on cannabis leaf extract applied by Guangzhou LONKEY, five have entered the substantive examination stage. In LONKEY’s Tmall flagship store, there is already a pre-sale called “VCARE Cannabis Leaf Extract Shower Gel and Hand Sanitizer Set." The page shows that the product line's price is 199 yuan, and the store will start to deliver products on April 20. According to the product introduction, the product contains cannabis leaf extract purported to moisturize the skin. VCARE is a high-end personal care brand owned by LONKEY. Cannabis Cosmetics in China

One Leaf from Chicmax Group and Yunnanbaiyao has also announced plans to develop a range of cannabis products. As Cannabis leaf extract is included in the Inventory of Existing Cosmetics Ingredients in China, domestic companies using this ingredient are eligible to use the filing system. There are nearly 700 “cannabis” related cosmetics filed on the system as of April 9.

In China, there are only three ingredients from cannabis included in the Inventory of Existing Cosmetic Ingredients in China 2015 (IECIC2015). They are cannabis Sativa fruit, cannabis Sativa seed oil, and cannabis Sativa leaf extract, which means CBD is still illegal in China. LONKEY’s new products only contain cannabis leaf extract.
