Danone | Food, beverage, infant formula | Danone reported first-half sales of about 12.2 billion euros, down 1.1% from a year earlier, with sales flat, up 0.1%. In the first half, sales revenue from China's specialty nutrition business grew 2.7% year on year. |
Company Dynamics
1. Plant-based meat company Beyond Meat announced to officially enter the Chinese mainland retail market through Chinese fresh food new retailer Fresh Hema. Its plant-based patties have been available at 50 Hema stores in Shanghai starting from July 4. Later, the product will be available at Hema stores in Hangzhou, Beijing, and Guangdong in August and September.
2. Yan Lu, Asia General Manager of the Infant Food Division of the H&H Group, said a series of new products under the children's snack brand GOOD GOÛT will be launched in 2020Q3. GOOD GOÛT is marketed in Asia for organic children's snacks between the ages of 3 and 12, including purees, nut bars, brownies, cereal crunches, etc.
3. Japan's Meiji announced to establish a company in south China's Guangzhou that produces and sells milk, yogurt, and pastries. The registered capital is about 18.4 billion yen (RMB1.2 billion), and the factory will start construction in the first half of 2021 and put into production in 2023.
4. Danone announced the official opening of its newly established Open Scientific Research Center in Shanghai. The center is mainly responsible for breast milk research, intestinal health, and food safety and quality, to provide faster and more innovative nutritional product.
5. The principal scientist of Reeborne (an infant formula brand of Mengniu Yashily) announced the research fruit of his group, a new structure lipid called UPU. It is said the application of UPU will enhance the similarity degree of fat composition between infant formula and breast milk from 50% to 90%.
6. Global fast-food chain Burger King was accused of using stale bread to make burgers in several outlets in the eastern city of Nanchang during this year's "315 Evening Gala." Following the exposure, Burger King issued an apology on Weibo, saying the restaurants in question were operated by a franchisee and would be closed pending an investigation.

Regulatory Updates
2. According to GAC notification issued on Jul. 4, the import qualification of meat products from some overseas manufacturers are suspended, involving Germany, Brazil, UK, Argentina, Italy, and Netherlands.
3. On Jul 8th, State Council of China released the 2020 Legislation Work Plan, which listed 16 draft regulations for approval and 26 regulations to be drafted or amended.
4. On Jul. 9th, CFSA unveiled the exposure draft of GB 10769 National Food Safety Standard Cereal-Based Complementary Foods for Infants and Young Children, and the proposed revision mainly involves the product definition, nutrient levels and package requirements.
5. On July 10th, China GAC announced to suspend the import qualifications (i.e. GAC registration approval) of three Ecuadorian manufacturers due to COVID-19 virus detected positive on the outside packages of imported frozen shrimps.
7. According to the recent updates on July 14, ten countries have the information of their registered dairy manufacturers updated, including Serbia, Italy, Spain, Russia, Germany, Poland, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Brazil and Argentina.
